Simple strength and warm-up habits to keep Griffith's weekend athletes on the field.
Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries in Griffith's footy and netball seasons, and many are preventable. A few simple habits make a real difference.
Cold ankles are stiff ankles. A few minutes of dynamic movement, hops, lateral steps and calf raises, wakes up the muscles that protect the joint.
Most sprains happen when you land or change direction. Practising balance on one leg (even while brushing your teeth) trains the ankle to react faster.
Boots, court shoes and trainers aren't interchangeable. The wrong grip for the surface is a common cause of rolled ankles.
A poorly rehabbed ankle is the biggest risk factor for the next one. If you've sprained before, a return-to-sport plan is worth it.
If you've had a sprain that keeps coming back, come and see me, recurring instability is very treatable.
